A Method for Detection and Classification of Clouds over Water

The MERIS standard algorithm for detection of clouds is serving various purposes and therefore a compromise of various requirements. The detection of thin clouds and ice haze for ocean colour applications needs to be improved significantly. We present a method similar to the 'Novelty Detection' (DOI 10.1007/s10661-006-9538-5) but analysing all 15 bands between 412nm and 900nm, calculating the top of standard atmosphere (TOSA) reflectances including the oxygen absorption band after applying a specific wavelength-shift correction (smile correction). Reflectance spectra representing all spectral shapes were selected and classified into different cloudiness classes by experts who were looking also into spatial patterns of the suspected thin clouds. A two-step learning procedure was used to produce the 'spectrum to cloudiness' relationship emulating the experts classification.
